Meet the Artist

Gemma Colson (b. 1989) is an accomplished oil painter based in the Surrey Hills, England. Trained at Falmouth University, formally known as Falmouth School of Art, Colson has continued her painting practice for over a decade, drawing inspiration from the macro close-up details found in nature that we so frequently miss in our busy modern lives.

With the aim of bringing a sense of calm and serenity into the home through subtle and ethereal colours, Colson’s use of impasto mark-making suggests the intricate textures that we instinctively associate with the natural world. From the inside of a shell to moss on a weathered rock, each one prompting the question "Am I the only person to ever see this beautiful detail?” Colson brings this curiosity into the studio to recreate the feeling of being grounded back into the earth, to feel calm, carefree and present amongst nature.

Colson’s work is primarily created on a large scale, intentionally inviting the viewer to feel smaller in comparison to the art, similar to how one might feel when standing in nature and soaking up the sense of grandeur and tranquility. Oil paints are spread, etched and sculpted with cold beeswax across the surface of the canvas with palette knives and found objects. Colours vary in all tones and depth to create a deeper, richer feeling to each artwork.

Throughout the year, Colson’s flow of work is two-fold - primarily focusing on client led briefs for the interior design industry whilst also releasing collections and series of artwork for individuals and collectors alike.

Colson exhibits throughout the year, hosting solo exhibitions and as part of group shows, most recently taking part in the Holiday House Hamptons 2025, featured in Luxe Magazine & Architectural Digest.

One of the best ways to view the artwork and discuss upcoming projects is to visit the studio in person or to book a call directly with Gemma herself. Look forward to speaking with you soon!
